Wendy's story- 

“Last spring I got the kind of news that changes a person’s life forever. I learned that I have the BRCA2 gene mutation that means my lifetime risk for breast cancer is close to 90% and for ovarian cancer around 40%. My husband and I decided that prophylactic surgery to remove my ovaries and breasts was the right route for us, mainly because we wanted to take the opportunity to get out ahead of cancer rather than react when and if it showed up. I was fortunate to have a great team of experts to help me sort through the decisions that had to be made and treat me accordingly, but one of the standouts was Dr. Chris Oliver.

The first surgery was a total hysterectomy, which would throw me into the unknown and potentially miserable world of surgical menopause. I would be ineligible for hormone replacement therapy because of its breast cancer risk - we weren’t removing one risk to add another. Worried about that and knowing that I wanted to get off painkillers as soon as possible after the surgery, I started seeing Dr. Oliver in the weeks before my hysterectomy for chiropractic and acupuncture therapy. My surgeons were very supportive. Regarding the surgical menopause, one said that “where Western medicine left me no options,” he had “great hope for Eastern.”

I felt so strong and ready for the first surgery, and because it was performed laproscopically, I didn’t have a big incision to deal with. But I was very sore. As soon as I could leave my house, I was driven to see Dr. Oliver. I left his office standing tall and feeling pain-free, and after regular chiropractic and acupuncture visits in the following weeks, I never had pain from that surgery again. I also didn’t have a single symptom of menopause. I credit Dr. Oliver’s treatment with helping me to physically heal so quickly and easily, but it was his friendly, calm, reassuring presence that gave me the mental strength I needed. A hand on the shoulder and heart-felt “We’re going to get your through this” did more for me than a medicine cabinet full of pills ever could.

My subsequent double mastectomy went equally smoothly, and again I felt ready for it because of Dr. Oliver’s compassion and expert treatment. I’m actually still recovering from that surgery, but Dr. Oliver has assured me that together we’ll get me all the way better. And, as always, I have complete faith in him.”
